What is a rich snippet?

Introduced in 2009, rich snippets are used to enrich web page search results, particularly on Google. Rich snippets are additional information displayed under the meta title or meta description of a web page.

These rich snippets can be stars for customer reviews. Or cooking times for recipe results. If the results relate to events, the rich snippet can display the location or time of the event.

This may evolve over time, but there are 8 main areas of use for rich snippets:

The display of this additional information is made possible by structured data. This structured data is used in the code of the page displayed in search results. Rich snippets are semantic tags implemented in the HTML code of a web page. The structured data present in the code provides search engines with additional information. They can then integrate this information into their results. This enables web users to see important information directly in the SERPs.

Be careful not to confuse rich snippets with featured snippets. Rich snippets refer to all forms of results present in Google SERPs via visual elements. The purpose of these elements (stars, photos, symbols) is to enrich the results. Featured snippets are much the same, except that they are offered in position zero. A Google SERP may contain several rich snippets, but only one featured snippet.

Rich snippet and its impact on SEO

Google’s decision to add rich snippets to its SERP is not without reason. The aim is to offer Internet users an optimal search experience. Rich snippets improve the user experience by enabling them to quickly see the most relevant results.

Rich snippets don’t directly influence a page’s ranking in the SERP. However, it does play a role in SEO.

Indeed, the structured data in rich snippets helps to improve the visibility of the website in question, and makes it easier for visitors to understand why they should click on it. This in turn helps to increase your CTR and traffic to your site, which in turn can impact your position on search engines. In this sense, rich snippets have an impact on SEO.

Some rich snippets can also play a reassuring role for Google, giving it signs of E-A-T, which also helps to improve your naturalreferencing.
